How to Write an Application to the Principal for Leave

  1. Start with your name and class. The principal reads many letters, so say who you are in the first line.
  2. Give the real reason in one sentence. "My sister is getting married" is clearer than a long story.
  3. Write the dates. Put the start date, the end date and the number of days.
  4. Ask politely. Use "Kindly grant me leave" or "I request you to grant me leave".
  5. Say how you will catch up. One line about notes or homework is enough.

In CBSE exams, a leave letter is marked for format, content and language. Keep the body to about 60 to 120 words, or follow the word limit in your question paper. For college, see the leave application for college page.

Tips for Writing a School Leave Application

  • Give planned leave, like a wedding or a trip, at least three days before it starts.
  • If you were absent without notice, bring the application on the day you return.
  • Students in lower classes should ask a parent to write or sign the letter to the class teacher.
  • Write the subject in plain words. The teacher should know the reason before reading the body.
  • Do not ask for more days than you need. Long leave during exams is often refused.
  • Attach proof, such as an invitation card or a selection letter, when you have one.
  • Keep your handwriting neat and leave a line between each part of the letter.

Questions people ask

How do I write a leave application for school?

Write "To, The Principal" with the school name, then the date, a short subject and "Respected Sir/Madam". In the body, give your name and class, the reason and the dates. End with "Thanking you, Yours obediently" and your name, class and roll number.

Who should write the leave letter, the student or the parent?

Older students usually write their own application to the principal. For younger children, or when the family is travelling, a parent writes to the class teacher or principal and signs with a phone number.

What is an application for an urgent piece of work?

It is a short leave letter for a day when you must stay home for some urgent family work. It is a common practice question in school exams. Keep it to one day and say you will make up for missed lessons.

How do I write an application for absent in school?

Say the date you were absent, the reason, and why you could not inform the school earlier. Then ask the teacher to excuse the absence. Give it on the day you rejoin.

Can a teacher use the same format for leave?

Yes. A teacher writes to the principal in the same format but closes with "Yours faithfully" and signs with name and designation. Mention who will take the classes while you are away.
