Difference Between Relieving Letter and Experience Letter

Many people ask if the relieving letter and experience letter are the same. They are related, but not the same.

  • Relieving letter: confirms that your resignation was accepted and that you were released from your duties on a certain date, with no pending handover. A new employer uses it to check that you have left your old job properly.
  • Experience letter: confirms how long you worked, your designation and your role. It is proof of work experience.

Some companies combine both into one experience cum relieving letter, like the sample above. If you need only the experience certificate, see the experience letter page. To resign first, use the resignation letter samples.

Tips for HR and Employees on Relieving Letters

  • HR should issue the relieving letter on the last working day, or as soon as clearance is done. Delays can hold up the employee's new job.
  • Always mention both the joining date and the last working day. Background checks compare these dates.
  • Do not mention the reason for leaving unless the employee asks. "Personal reasons" or no reason is common.
  • Employees should finish handover and return all company property early, so clearance does not delay the letter.
  • Keep a scanned copy of the original relieving letter in your email and on your phone. You may need it years later.
  • If the company refuses to give the letter, ask in writing by email and keep a record of every reply.
  • Check the spelling of your name, employee ID and designation before you leave the office.
