NOC Letter Format and How to Write It

There are two kinds of NOC letters: the application for NOC, which you send to ask for one, and the NOC itself, which the employer, bank, owner or college issues. Both are short formal letters.

Name the exact purpose, such as a passport, a course or a sale, because an NOC is usually accepted only for the purpose written on it. Tips for an NOC Letter or NOC Application

  • Write the purpose in one clear line. An NOC for a passport cannot be reused for a visa or a loan.
  • Ask early. HR, banks and societies may take a few days to verify and sign.
  • An NOC issued by an organisation should be on its letterhead, with a signature and seal.
  • Mention reference numbers such as employee ID, loan account number or flat number.
  • Check the format the receiving office wants. Some passport offices and banks have their own format.
  • Keep a scanned copy of every NOC you receive.

What is an NOC letter?

NOC stands for No Objection Certificate. It is a letter in which a person or organisation states that it has no objection to a particular action, such as an employee travelling abroad, a tenant using the address, or a bank releasing a vehicle from a loan.

How do I write an NOC application?

Address it to the person who will issue the NOC, write a subject like "Request for NOC for [purpose]", and explain who you are, why you need it and by what date. Mention your employee ID, roll number or account number, and attach any supporting document.

Who signs an NOC letter for an employee?

Usually the HR manager or another authorised person signs it on the company letterhead. Some offices also ask for the company seal.

When do I need a loan NOC?

You need it after you repay a loan in full. It proves that nothing is due to the bank, and it is needed to remove the hypothecation from a vehicle's RC or to get back property documents. For a home loan, banks regulated by the RBI must return your original property documents within 30 days of full repayment.

Is a no objection letter the same as a permission letter?

They are close. A permission letter asks for or gives permission to do something. A no objection letter states that the issuer will not oppose an action, and it is often asked for by a third party such as a passport office or a college.
