How to Write an Application to the Principal

  1. Start with the request. In the first two lines, say who you are and what you need. The principal reads many letters a day.
  2. Give one clear reason. One honest reason is better than three weak ones.
  3. Add dates and details. Write the test date, trip dates or bus stop, so the office can act on it.
  4. Mention proof. If you attach a certificate or photo, add an Enclosure line at the end.
  5. Get it signed. Ask a parent to sign when the request involves fees, trips or a change of subject.

Tips for Writing a Letter to the Principal

  • Write the subject line in under 10 words so the purpose is clear at a glance.
  • Use "Respected Sir/Madam" and close with "Yours obediently". This is the standard for school students.
  • Hand the application to your class teacher first. Many schools want the teacher to forward it.
  • For fee, trip or subject requests, get a parent's signature on the letter.
  • Attach proof when you have it, such as an income certificate, report card or photograph.
  • Write neatly on plain paper, or print it, and keep a photocopy for your records.
  • Follow up politely with the school office after two or three working days.

Questions people ask

How do I write an application to the principal?

Write To, The Principal, the school name and city, then the date and a short subject. Begin with "Respected Sir/Madam", state your request and reason in two short paragraphs, and end with "Thanking you, Yours obediently" and your name, class and roll number.

What is the format of a formal letter to the principal?

The school format is: To (receiver), Date, Subject, Salutation, Body, Closing and Signature. In CBSE exams, the sender's address comes first, above the date.

Can I write a fees application for school myself, or should my parents write it?

Senior students can write it themselves, but a parent should sign it because fees are a family matter. Younger students usually have the parent write the whole letter.

How do I write an application for admission in school?

Address it to the principal, mention the class you want admission in, your previous school and marks, and the reason for choosing this school. A parent signs it and attaches the documents the school asks for.

Which salutation should I use in a school application?

Use "Respected Sir", "Respected Madam" or "Respected Sir/Madam" if you are not sure. Avoid "Dear Principal" in a school application.
