Bonafide Certificate or Character Certificate: Which One to Ask For

  • Bonafide certificate: proves that you are a current student of the school or college. Ask for it while you are still studying there, for scholarships, passports, bank accounts and travel passes.
  • Character certificate: describes your conduct during your time at the institution. It is usually issued when you leave, along with the transfer certificate, and is needed for admission or a job.

If a form simply asks for "proof of study", a bonafide certificate is what they mean.

Tips for a Bonafide Certificate Application

  • Always write the purpose. Some schools print it on the certificate, and some forms need that wording.
  • If the scholarship or bank gives a fixed format, attach it and ask the office to fill that format.
  • Check your name and date of birth on the certificate against your ID card before you leave the office.
  • Ask early. Signing and sealing can take two to five working days.
  • Ask for two copies if you are applying in more than one place.
