What Is a Consent Letter and How to Write One

A consent letter is a written yes. It shows that the person responsible, usually a parent, knows what will happen and agrees to it. Schools keep these letters on file for trips, camps and medical camps.

  1. Name the activity exactly. Write the event, the place and the dates. A consent for "all trips" is not useful.
  2. Use clear words. "I give my consent" or "I allow my child" leaves no doubt.
  3. Add health facts. Mention allergies, regular medicines or anything the teachers should know.
  4. Give a working phone number. The school must be able to reach you during the event.
  5. Sign by hand. A printed name alone is often not accepted.

If the school asks you to request something, such as leave for your child, use a leave application for school instead.

Tips for Writing a Consent Letter

  • Read the school circular first and copy the exact event name and dates into your letter.
  • Keep the body short: 60 to 120 words is enough for most school consent letters.
  • Mention any allergy, medicine or health condition, even if it seems small.
  • For overnight tours, ask whether the school needs both parents' signatures.
  • Attach ID copies only when asked, and write "for school trip only" across them.
  • Keep a photo of the signed letter on your phone until the event is over.

Questions people ask

What is a consent letter?

It is a signed letter in which a person gives permission for something. In schools, it usually means a parent agreeing to let a child take part in a trip, camp, sports event or health check up.

How do I write a consent letter for a school trip?

Address it to the class teacher or principal. Write the date and a subject like "Consent for school trip to [Place]". Say that you give consent for your child to go, add the date and any health note, and sign with your phone number.

What is the difference between a consent letter and a permission letter?

In a permission letter you ask someone for permission. In a consent letter you give permission. A parent signing for a school trip is giving consent.

Can a student write the consent letter?

No. A consent letter must come from the parent or legal guardian, because they are the ones giving permission. The student can fill in the details, but the parent must sign.

Is a consent letter a legal document?

It is a written record of permission and schools rely on it. Whether it has legal force depends on the situation, so for travel or official matters follow the format the organisation asks for.
