How to Write Notice Writing in the Exam

  1. Read the question twice. Note the name, designation, organisation and every detail given. Use only these, and add small details only if they fit.
  2. Draw the box first. Everything from the organisation name to the signature goes inside it.
  3. Check the five points. What, when, where, who can take part, and whom to contact. Missing any one of them costs marks.
  4. Keep the language formal and short. No greetings, no "Dear students", no "Thank you" at the end.
  5. Leave time to count words. Stay close to the word limit in the question.

In CBSE and most other boards, marks for notice writing are usually split between format, content and expression (spelling, grammar and clarity). Check your board's latest sample paper for the exact marks. For other writing questions, see the formal letter, email writing and letter to the editor pages.

Notice Writing Topics for Practice

Pick a topic, set a timer for 10 minutes and write the notice in the format above. The first topics suit Class 6 to 8, and the later ones suit Class 9 to 12.

  • Lost: a geometry box in the school bus
  • Found: a gold ring near the school canteen
  • Inter class drawing competition
  • Selection trials for the school cricket team
  • Auditions for the school choir
  • Cleanliness drive in the school campus
  • Tree plantation drive on World Environment Day
  • Summer camp for dance, music and art
  • Change in the date of the half yearly exams
  • Farewell party for Class 12 students
  • Free health check-up camp in the society
  • Ban on parking near the society gate
  • Fire safety drill in the residential complex
  • Career counselling session for Class 11 and 12

Tips for Notice Writing

  • Always put the notice in a box. In the exam, only the notice goes inside the box, not your rough work.
  • Write the heading in capital letters and keep it between two and five words.
  • Give exact details: date, day, time and place. "Next week" or "in the hall" is too vague.
  • Use the name and designation given in the question. If none is given, write a designation only, such as Secretary.
  • Use simple formal words such as "is organising", "will be held" and "interested students may contact".
  • Most teachers count only the body for the word limit, but stay close to it either way.
  • Do not add a salutation or a closing like "Yours sincerely". A notice is not a letter.

Questions people ask

What is notice writing?

Notice writing is writing a short, formal announcement that is put up on a notice board or shared with a group. It tells people about an event, a change, a lost or found item, or an instruction. It is part of the writing section in English exams from about Class 5 to Class 12.

What is the notice writing format for Class 12?

The Class 12 format is: name of the organisation, the word NOTICE, date, heading, body and the writer's name with designation, all inside a box. The body should answer what, when, where, who and whom to contact. Follow the word limit given in your question paper.

What is the word limit for notice writing?

It is usually around 50 words for Classes 9 to 12, and a little shorter for junior classes. Limits vary by board and year, so always follow the limit written in the question.

Is a box compulsory in notice writing?

It is the standard practice. In school exams the notice is usually written inside a box because a real notice is a separate sheet on a board. Many teachers expect the box, so draw it unless your teacher or board says otherwise.

What is the difference between a notice and a letter?

A letter is written to one person or office and has a salutation and closing. A notice is for a group of people, has a heading instead of a subject, and has no salutation or closing.

Is a notice period letter the same as notice writing?

No. A notice period letter is a resignation letter in which an employee tells the employer when the last working day will be. For that, see the resignation letter page on this site.
