Dear Recipient Name,

I was so happy to get your letter last week. It made me miss our school days together even more.

I am writing to invite you to my birthday party on start date. My parents are planning a small get-together at home in the evening. There will be a treasure hunt in the garden, music, and the chocolate cake you liked so much last time.

It would mean a lot to me if you came. You can stay with us for the weekend, and we can visit the new science museum near my house on Sunday. My mother has already spoken to your mother about it.

Please write back soon and tell me when your train reaches. Convey my regards to uncle and aunty.

Dear Recipient Name,

My heartiest congratulations on your wonderful result. I saw your name in the list of school toppers in the newspaper this morning, and I could not stop smiling.

I know how hard you worked for this. You gave up cricket in the evenings, revised every chapter twice and still found time to help me with maths. You truly deserve every mark.

Your parents must be very proud of you. Have you decided which stream you will take now? Whatever you choose, I am sure you will do well in it.

Let us celebrate when I come home during the holidays. The ice cream is on me this time.

Dear Father,

I hope you and Mother are in good health. I am fine here, and my half-yearly exams went well.

Our school is taking the students of Class Class on a five-day educational tour to place next month. We will visit a dam, a planetarium and two historical forts. Our teachers say it will help us a lot in geography and history.

The school has asked each student to pay Amount by end date for travel, food and stay. I have also kept some of my pocket money aside for small expenses.

Kindly send the amount, or transfer it to the school account, if you agree. I promise to share every detail of the trip with you when I return.

Dear Mother,

It has been three weeks since I came to the hostel, and I finally have time to write to you properly.

The first few nights were hard. I missed your food and our evening walks. Now I have settled in. My roommates are friendly, and one of them is from our state, so we chat in our own language.

Our day starts at six with exercise. After classes, we have games, then two hours of self-study. The warden is strict about lights out at ten, which I did not like at first, but I feel fresher in the mornings now.

Please do not worry about me. I am eating well and taking care of my health. Give my love to Father and little sibling's name.

Letter to Younger Brother Advising Him to Reduce Screen Time

For an elder sibling advising a younger brother who spends too much time on mobile games. A popular advice letter topic in class 8 to 10.

Address

Date
Dear Recipient Name,

Mother told me on the phone that you have been playing games on the mobile till late at night, and that your marks in the unit test have dropped. I am writing because I care about you, not to scold you.

Too much screen time tires the eyes, spoils sleep and makes it hard to focus in class. I went through the same thing in Class 7, so I know how easily one hour turns into three.

Try this: finish your homework first, then keep the phone for only thirty minutes. Spend the evenings cycling or playing football in the park. You will feel more active, and you will sleep better too.

I believe in you, little brother. Write to me and tell me how it goes.

Dear Recipient Name,

Father just called and gave me the great news that you won first prize in the inter-school debate competition. Many congratulations, dear sister.

I remember how nervous you were when you practised your speech in front of the mirror at home. You kept saying you would forget your points. Look at you now, a champion standing on the stage with a trophy.

This win shows that practice and courage really pay off. Do not stop here. Join the school's public speaking club and try for the state level next year.

I have bought a small gift for you, and I will bring it when I come home for the vacation. Keep shining.

Dear Grandpa and Grandma,

Thank you so much for the lovely set of storybooks you sent for my birthday. The parcel reached two days before the party, and I opened it first of all my gifts.

I have already finished two of the books. My favourite is the one about the boy who travels across the desert with his camel. I read a few pages every night before sleeping, just like you taught me when I stayed with you last summer.

I missed you both at the party. Mother says we will visit the village in the Diwali holidays. I am counting the days already.

Please take care of your health, and do write back soon.

Dear Recipient Name,

We came back from our holiday in the hills only yesterday, and you are the first person I wanted to write to.

We stayed for five days in a small cottage surrounded by pine trees. Every morning the valley was covered in mist, and by noon the snowy peaks shone in the sun. It was so cold that I wore two sweaters even inside the room.

The best part was the trek to a waterfall. The path was steep and slippery, but the view from the top was worth every step. We also rode ponies, ate hot momos by the roadside and bought wooden toys at the local market.

I have taken lots of photos to show you. You must come with us next time.

Dear Recipient Name,

I was deeply sorry to hear that your grandfather passed away last week. I know how close you were to him, and I cannot imagine how much you must be missing him.

I still remember the summer I spent at your house. He told us stories of his childhood every evening and taught us to play chess on the verandah. He was kind and gentle with everyone.

Please take care of yourself and your grandmother. Spend time with her, because she will need you now more than ever. It is all right to feel sad. Give yourself time.

If you want to talk, call me any evening. I am always there for you.

Dear Recipient Name,

I reached home safely on Sunday night. The train was late by two hours, but I spent the time looking at the photos from our week together.

Thank you for making my stay so special. Your parents treated me like their own child. Aunty's aloo parathas and uncle's funny jokes at dinner are things I will not forget. I also enjoyed our boat ride on the lake and the evening at the fair.

Please thank your parents on my behalf. My mother has also asked me to send her regards to them.

Now it is your turn to visit us. Plan to come in the winter break, and I will show you around my city.

Dear Recipient Name,

Happy birthday to my best friend. I am sorry I cannot be with you today, so I am sending this letter and a small gift to make up for it.

We have been friends since the first day of Class 1, when you shared your lunch with me because I had forgotten mine. Since then you have shared everything: secrets, notes, laughter and even the blame when we got caught talking in class.

Thank you for always standing by me. I wish you a year full of good health, good marks and many new adventures. Stay the same cheerful person you are.

Informal Letter Topics for Class 5, 6, 7 and 8

Practise with these informal letter topics. Most school exams pick one of these types.

  • Write a letter to your friend inviting him or her to spend the summer vacation with you.
  • Write a letter to your father telling him about your preparation for the final exams.
  • Write a letter to your mother describing your first day at a new school.
  • Write a letter to your younger sister advising her to eat healthy food.
  • Write a letter to your grandmother telling her about the Annual Day function at school.
  • Write a letter to your friend congratulating him or her on being made the school captain.

Tips for Writing an Informal Letter

  • Keep the body between 100 and 150 words for class 6 to 10 exams unless the question says otherwise.
  • Start with a warm line, but come to the main purpose by the second paragraph.
  • Write the way you talk to the person, but keep spelling and grammar correct.
  • Use one paragraph for each idea. Three or four short paragraphs look neat.
  • Match the closing to the relation: "Your loving son" for parents, "Your loving friend" for a friend.
  • Never write a subject line or the receiver's address in a personal letter.
  • In the exam, use the name and address given in the question, not your real details.

Questions people ask

What is an informal letter?

An informal letter is a personal letter written to someone you know well, like a friend, parent or relative. It uses friendly language and shares news, wishes, thanks or advice. It has no subject line.

What is the format of an informal letter?

Write your address, then the date, then a greeting such as "Dear [Recipient Name],". After that comes the body in short paragraphs, a closing like "Your loving friend," and your first name.

Is there a subject in an informal letter?

No. A subject line is used only in formal letters. In an informal letter you go straight from the date to the greeting.

How many words should an informal letter for class 6 have?

Around 100 to 120 words is enough for class 5 and class 6. For class 8 to 10, aim for 120 to 150 words. Always follow the word limit given in your question paper.

Is the informal letter still in the CBSE syllabus?

Board papers for the higher classes usually focus on formal letters, so check the latest syllabus from your school. Many schools still teach and test the informal letter in class 4 to 8, so it is worth practising.
